PAST EVENTS

Thursday 26 January 2012 - Australia Day Celebration

A friendly gathering, a funny film and lots of fabulous food! We ate Tofu on Australia Day -- because animal cruelty is un-Australian... (We were hoping Sam Kekovich would join us for the celebration but there was no sign of him anywhere... maybe next year.)

Sunday 11 December 2011 - BARN end of year gathering

A group of animal lovers got together on 11 December to watch a heart-warming film and to share some great food. The film was Amazing Grace, which tells the true story of how slavery was abolished in the UK just 200 years ago. After the film we discussed some of the parallels between the exploitation of humans during the slave era and the exploitation of non-humans in contemporary society.

Their morning session involved a powerpoint presentation and some practical discussion about some of the ethical issues students might be confronted with as they pursue various forms of animal related employment. It also included a screening of the short documentary Human Animal. The documentary can now be viewed online at this link.

Sunday 3 July 2011 - Film Screening - Bold Native

Thank you to everyone who attended the Bold Native screening. Bold Native tells the fictional story of animal rescuer, Charlie Cranehill, who breaks the law to save animals. When Charlie goes underground and begins planning the most extensive animal liberation operation the country has ever seen, his estranged father makes one last desperate attempt to find his son before the FBI does... A fast moving film, made for an intelligent audience, it is both heart-warming and educational, with moments of humour and flashes of horror. Bold Native offers a ground breaking cinematic experience which challenges viewers to re-think their values. With clever dialogue and an excellent soundtrack, it is a road trip movie with a difference. A copy of the film is now available from the BARN's Lending Library. It is recommended for ADULTS ONLY. (Contains nudity and adult themes, frequent coarse language and strong violence.)

Saturday 13 November 2010

Thank you to all who attended the Wildlife Rescue Training Day on November 13. Narelle Smith from Wildlife Rescuers shared her knowledge and experience with an enthusiastic crowd. Attendees came from several towns across West Gippsland, as well as from suburbs closer to Melbourne including Berwick, Cheltenham and Surrey Hills. It was a successful day, and one which we hope will be followed up in 2011 with a further training event.
